The Secret to a Strong Relationship

On a day when couples around the world are exchanging tokens and celebrating togetherness I thought it appropriate to recognise some of the great partnerships and the contribution they have made to our society. Any such list has to include Lennon and McCartney, Laurel and Hardy, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Rolls and Royce. These pairings have one thing in common. They were all incredibly talented individuals who produced their best work when partnered together. Why? The simple answer would be to say they complemented each other perfectly, but what does that mean?
As a sport obsessed teenager one of my favourite movies was 'Chariots of Fire'. Apart from the inspirational Vangelis score, the theme of striving to be the best in your field struck a chord with anyone who played sport. For me a key scene in the film is when a deflated Harold Abrahams has just lost a key race to his rival Eric Liddell. As he sits in the stands a dejected figure, professional trainer Sam Mussabini calls up to him 'Mr Abrahams, I can find you another two yards!'. You probably know the rest of the story - Abrahams goes on to win a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Perhaps that's what great partnerships are about, finding another two yards.
