Customer expectations on fast delivery times for online orders has been a particular challenge for retailers and last mile delivery providers. It’s a tough task. In Romania and surrounding countries, it’s also common to pay cash on delivery. This adds another layer of complexity for courier companies, having to collect, reconcile, process and bank cash payments.


Sameday Romania is a courier company with great ambitions. It has grown considerably over the last few years, becoming the market leader in the out-of-home delivery sector, and one of the top courier companies in the region. As well as pick-up and delivery services, Sameday developed the easybox network, that counts over 3600 ‘easyboxes’ only in Romania. The easybox is a self-service automated parcel locker, a solution that enables customers to conveniently pick up and return packages.


To fulfill its 24hr delivery promise Sameday’s biggest ally is technology. They have relied on smart technology solutions to fulfill their customer promise and grow the business.


Having invested in technology to automate its parcel management, Sameday found room for improvement in the way cash payments from customers were managed. Was there a technology solution that could transform their current manual and time-consuming processes?


The answer was yes. They consulted with the Glory Distributor, Ropeco, to explore what improvements could be achieved. The solution suggested by Ropeco would transform the way it handled cash payments.


The Benefits


The self-service hardware allows for user controls and authentication, automated cash counting, identification of suspect banknotes and coins, secure storage of cash in the safe within each device, and a secure collection process by the CIT company that removes sealed bags from the device.


Staff that worked in the cash offices are now re-deployed and used in more productive tasks, freed from the need to spend valuable time managing courier cash deposits, counting cash, identifying, and reconciling errors and managing collections.


For courier drivers, the process to deposit cash is much easier. They no longer need to sort notes themselves and do not have the stress of handling cash. They can now deposit cash quickly and securely, 24/7, into the devices at the depot.


The business now has improved financial controls, security, visibility of cash holdings and streamlined reports and data processes.


Sameday has seen real benefits across its organization. Increased operational efficiency, improved courier staff productivity, and improved financial controls and processes. The Technology Solution
Ropeco and Sameday worked together to create a solution tailored to the specific needs of courier operations and its financial processes. They opted for cash automation hardware, using the Ropeco Smart Cash Deposit solution (powered by the Glory DE-50 cash recycling device), in some locations and the Glory CI-50 CASHINFINITY cash recycler in others. The hardware was then integrated into the relevant Sameday back-office software.


The self-service cash automation devices replaced the need for pay offices at Sameday locations. The hardware allowed couriers to deposit cash payments securely and independently into the devices, whilst the software ensured that there was a process that gave full visibility and traceability to the finance team for every cash transaction.

This was a massive step-change for Sameday.  Cash handling processes and management prior to adopting this new solution were largely manual, involving time-consuming tasks to count and reconcile cash payments, as well as the operational vulnerabilities and errors associated with manual cash handling.
