Absa Bank Kenya - A story about Improving Customer Service and Technology Adoption

ABSA-Kenya-blog-1140x810

During July and August 2022, assistants have been stationed at several Absa Kenya branches in Nairobi, supporting customers to become acquainted with the bank's recently installed self-service cash deposit machines (CDMs). Through the CDMS, customers can deposit cash quickly and easily, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the funds are instantly credited. This is undoubtedly a great step forward for customers, as you can read from their feedback.

For our part as Glory, we are proud to have instigated this initiative alongside our local technology partner in Kenya, Copy Cat Group, and providing support staff for this awareness campaign.

Prior to the COVID pandemic, Absa recognised that their customers would benefit greatly from in-branch self-service banking technologies. Today, customers have grown accustomed to and comfortable with self-service in many aspects of their daily lives. Among others, self-service removes customers from teller lines and puts them in charge. The customer journey in branch becomes smoother and more efficient for everyday banking transactions such as depositing funds.

The pandemic highlighted not only the convenience of such technologies, but also accelerated the need for and priority for their deployment. On the back of this, Absa turned to an established local technology provider, Copy Cat, to deliver and integrate the best technology solution to meet their needs. Absa Bank Kenya completed the necessary proof of concept in February this year at their Queensway Branch in Nairobi, allowing them to roll out self-service deposit machines in 31 branches across Kenya.

The technology that underpins self-service functionalities must function continuously, which necessitates a robust and dependable solution. Installing solutions and then constantly displaying 'Out of Order' signs will not result in the improved customer experience you seek. Besides, you require a user-friendly device that generates a receipt for accounting purposes. The Copy Cat Deposit Device is dependable, thanks to note and coin technology developed by Glory Global Solutions.

Absa Bank said the machines deployed are part of the banks efforts to scale alternate banking channels. They also noted their cashiers no longer spend long hours validating and counting bulk cash which frees up their human resources towards core customer service functions across the branch network.

Copy Cat Group and Glory are proud of this achievement and are working to help the bank's customers transition to this new self-service deposit provision with ease and confidence. This initiative demonstrates Absa Kenya's focus on the customer, as well as their desire to not only provide new solutions, but also to take the time to inform and educate their customers on new technology provisions.
